BitClub Network crim case continued to November 2020
Following a request by the DOJ, the BitClub Network criminal case has been continued through November 2020.
The reason for the delay in proceedings is designation of an “unusual or complex case”.
In light of the number of defendants, the nature of the prosecution, and the existence of novel questions of fact and law such that it is unreasonable to expect adequate preparation for pretrial proceedings or for the trial itself within 70 days.
Discovery collected by the DOJ includes two million electronic records, only five hundred thousand of which have been provided to the defendants.
The DOJ expects filtering of seized evidence for production won’t conclude until October 30th, “at the earliest”.
Consequently a July 16th order continues the case until November 15th, 2020. We’ll continue to provide any updates between now and then.
Update 13th November 2020 – The complex nature of the BitClub Network case has seen it extended again to March 4th, 2021.
The November 12th order specifically pertains to Matthew Brent Goettsche. It is unclear whether Russ Medlin’s case has also been continued.
