Asea is a Utah MLM company BehindMLM reviewed back in 2014.

Back then, Asea’s MLM opportunity could be distilled down to $33 a liter salt water. Needless to say I wasn’t impressed.

Eleven years on, at the request of a reader we’re revisiting Asea for an updated review.

The Company

Asea launched in 2009 by co-founders Verdis Norton (RIP 2025), Tyler Norton (son) and James Pack.

In 2014 Asea was headed up by CEO Chuck Funke. Funke is still around but as of 2025 serves as Vice Chairman.

Asea’s current CEO is Jarom Webb (right).

From Webb’s Asea corporate bio;

Jarom Webb joined ASEA during the pre-launch phase in 2009.

Jarom has served on the ASEA Board of Managers since its inception and brings to ASEA nearly two decades of experience in the direct selling industry.

Prior to taking on the CEO role in late 2024, Webb was Asea’s COO.

PV stands for “Personal Volume”. PV is sales volume generated via retail sales and an Asea promoter’s own orders.

GV stands for “Group Volume”. GV is PV generated by a promoter and their downline.

Note that for the ranks Diamond Executive through Triple Diamond Executive, no more than 50% of required GV counts from any one recruitment leg.

Retail Commissions

Asea promoters earn $25 per 50 PV in retail autoship sales volume.

Note Asea’s compensation plan also encourages promoters to purchase products for resale:

Purchase ASEA products at wholesale, sell them at retail, and keep the difference.

This is an outdated retail sales model that encourages inventory loading (promoters purchasing more product than they can sell).

The fallacy of this model is compensation volume is generated on the promoter’s purchase over the retail sale. With respect to regulatory compliance, this not true retail (ref: FTC v. Vemma, FTC v. Herbalife).

Note to qualify for retail commissions, an Asea promoter must be generating at least 100 PV a month.

Recruitment Commissions

Asea promoters earn a 20% commission on product orders by personally recruited promoters at time of recruitment.

Director Bonus

New Asea promoters who qualify at Director within 14 days of signing up receive a $50 Director Bonus.

Residual Commissions

Asea pays residual commissions via a binary compensation structure.

A binary compensation structure places a promoter at the top of a binary team, split into two sides (left and right):

The first level of the binary team houses two positions. The second level of the binary team is generated by splitting these first two positions into another two positions each (4 positions).

Subsequent levels of the binary team are generated as required, with each new level housing twice as many positions as the previous level.

Positions in the binary team are filled via direct and indirect recruitment of promoters. Note there is no limit to how deep a binary team can grow.

At the end of each week Asea tallies up new sales volume on both sides of the binary team.

If 300 GV or more is recorded on both sides of the binary team, promoters are paid 10% of weaker binary team side volume.

Once paid out on volume is matched against the stronger binary team side and flushed. Leftover volume carries over.

Matching Bonus

Asea promoters who generate 200 PV a month and qualify for residual commissions earn a Matching Bonus on up to seven generations of recruitment.

Note that Asea does not disclose Matching Bonus generations and rates.

Executive Momentum Pool

Asea takes 2% of company-wide sales volume and places it into the Executive Momentum Pool.

The Executive Momentum pool is broken into four smaller pools, corresponding with Bronze through Platinum ranks:

  • Bronze ranked promoters who rank-qualify for two months receive a share valid for 12 weeks in the Bronze Pool
  • Silver ranked promoters who rank-qualify for two consecutive months receive a share valid for 16 weeks in the Silver Pool
  • Gold ranked promoters who rank-qualify for two consecutive months receive a share valid for 20 weeks in the Gold Pool
  • Platinum ranked promoters who rank-qualify for two consecutive months receive a share valid for 24 weeks in the Platinum Pool

The value of individual shares is calculated based on an Asea promoters’ PV plus downline GV across three levels of recruitment.

Diamond Pool

Asea takes 3% of company-wide sales volume and places it into the Diamond Pool.

The Diamond Pool is paid to Diamond and higher ranked Asea promoters, based on downline sales volume:

  • a Diamond ranked promoter share is based on downline GV across four levels of recruitment
  • a Double Diamond ranked promoter share is based on downline GV across five levels of recruitment
  • a Triple Diamond ranked promoter share is based on downline GV across six levels of recruitment
  • an Ambassador Diamond ranked promoter share is based on downline GV across seven levels of recruitment
  • an Ambassador Double Diamond ranked promoter share is based on downline GV across eight levels of recruitment
  • an Ambassador Triple Diamond ranked promoter share is based on downline GV across nine levels of recruitment
  • a Presidential Diamond ranked promoter share is based on downline GV across ten levels of recruitment
  • a Presidential Double Diamond ranked promoter share is based on downline GV across eleven levels of recruitment
  • a Presidential Triple Diamond ranked promoter share is based on downline GV across twelve levels of recruitment

Asea Conclusion

In 2014 my main issues with Asea were $33 a liter salt water and a lack of retail focus. The bad news is these two issues have gone unaddressed.

Asea’s salt water now costs about $52.80 a liter (eight 8 oz. pouches for $100). And Asea is still pretty much set up as an autoship recruitment scheme.

On Asea’s salt water not being salt water, this from Asea’s Redox Cell Signaling FAQ;

Is ASEA just salt water?

No. ASEA is made of two ingredients: deionized water and sodium chloride, which is basically salt water.

Deionized water is water and sodium chloride is salt. Ergo salt water.

Asea goes on to argue its salt water “contain[s] redox signaling molecules”. Eleven years since BehindMLM published its first Asea review, there’s no definitive evidence these molecules do what Asea claims they do.

In 2017 Joe Schwarcz from McGill University in Canada concluded Asea’s redox signaling molecules were “pseudoscience”.

The term redox signaling is used when the chemical messengers between cells are free radicals.  What this has to do with ASEA is a mystery.

And we don’t get much help from the information on the label which states that “ASEA is a proprietary blend of naturally occurring reactive molecules derived from a patented redox balance process.

This unique process rearranges the constituent components into a beneficial mixture that is critical to to proper balanced cellular chemistry enabling the immune system to function at its optimum level.”

This is nothing more than meaningless double talk.  What reactive molecules are they talking about?  The only ingredient listed is salt.

I’m still not convinced that this whole thing didn’t start out as a joke by someone wondering if they could sell something as ridiculous as salt water as a health product.

In 2023 the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority took Asea to task over deceptive advertising;

The ad must not appear again in the form complained about. We told ASEA LLC t/a ASEA Redox not to claim that a food could treat, prevent, or cure human disease, to ensure that any specific health claims made in relation to foods and food supplements were authorised on the GB Register, and not to include general health claims unless those claims were accompanied by a relevant authorised health claim.

Be it in the UK or US, Asea has had sixteen years to obtain independent lab testing and seek approval from the FTC, FDA or ASA.

This hasn’t happened for what should be obvious reasons.

On Asea being a pyramid scheme, we still have promoter purchases being misclassified as retail sales. Asea also pushes promoter autoship as a way to “stay active [to] earn commissions”.

This lends itself to Asea being an autoship recruitment scheme. Sign up as an Asea promoter, place a salt water autoship order and recruitment others who do the same.

That appears to pretty much be the core of Asea’s MLM opportunity.

From BehindMLM’s 2014 Asea review;

Prospective affiliates can easily evaluate what they might be getting into by checking as to how much actual retail volume their potential upline is generating, compared to volume generated by autoship affiliate’s they’ve signed up.

When comparing, make sure you get actual retail volume figures and none of this “but I bought products to resell later” garbage. An affiliate’s own purchases of Asea products are not retail sales.

That still holds true today.

As of November 2025, SimilarWeb was tracking ~115,000 monthly visits to Asea’s website.

Top sources of Asea website traffic are Spain (45%), the US (27%), Australia (10%) and Hungary (9%).

If you’re in one of those countries, beware of Asea promoters trying to rope you in with bogus salt water medical claims.
