PetronPay Review: 300% ROI “oil barrels” Ponzi scheme
PetronPay provides no information on its website about who owns or runs the company.
PetronPay’s website domain (“petronpay.com”) was first registered in December 2019. The private registration was last updated on September 17th, 2020.
Marketing videos on PetronPay’s official YouTube channel feature actors with distinctly eastern-European accents.
The earliest videos date back to May 2020. Since then PetronPay has honed in on Africa, which is reflected both in their marketing and website traffic statistics.
Alexa currently ranks Cameroon (22%), Liberia (13%) and Cote d’Ivoire (12%), as the top three sources of traffic to PetronPay’s website.
Further research lead me to PetronPay marketing videos on unofficial channels. These videos cite “Johnny Grant” as CEO of the company.
As with PetronPay’s other videos, Grant is played by an actor with a distinct eastern European accent.
In an attempt to appear legitimate, PetronPay provides a corporate address in Switzerland on its website.
This has already caught the attention of Swiss authorities, who issued a securities fraud warning against PetronPay earlier this year.
One other oddity I noticed it the use of random French words in what is supposed to be PetronPay’s English compensation material. Currency decimals are also represented by commas, as is common across Europe.
As always, if an MLM company is not openly upfront about who is running or owns it, think long and hard about joining and/or handing over any money.
PetronPay’s Products
PetronPay has no retailable products or services, with affiliates only able to market PetronPay affiliate membership itself.

Direct Commissions
PetronPay pays direct commissions via a unilevel compensation structure.
A unilevel compensation structure places an affiliate at the top of a unilevel team, with every personally recruited affiliate placed directly under them (level 1):
If any level 1 affiliates recruit new affiliates, they are placed on level 2 of the original affiliate’s unilevel team.
If any level 2 affiliates recruit new affiliates, they are placed on level 3 and so on and so forth down a theoretical infinite number of levels.
PetronPay caps payable unilevel team levels at 6.
10% of funds invested are paid out as direct commissions across these six levels as follows:
- level 1 (personally recruited affiliates) – 50% (of 10%)
- levels 2 to 6 – 10% (of 10%)
Residual Commissions
PetronPay pays residual commissions via a binary compensation structure.
A binary compensation structure places an affiliate at the top of a binary team, split into two sides (left and right):
The first level of the binary team houses two positions. The second level of the binary team is generated by splitting these first two positions into another two positions each (4 positions).
Subsequent levels of the binary team are generated as required, with each new level housing twice as many positions as the previous level.
Positions in the binary team are filled via direct and indirect recruitment of affiliates. Note there is no limit to how deep a binary team can grow.
Each PetronPay investment tier corresponds with a binary point value:
- Barrel 25 – 5 points
- Barrel 50 – 10 points
- Barrel 99 – 20 points
- Barrel 249 – 50 points
- Barrel 499 – 100 points
- Barrel 999 – 200 points
- Barrel 1999 – 400 points
Points are generated across the binary team when affiliates placed into the team invest.
At the end of each day PetronPay tallies up new points on both sides of the binary team.
Affiliates are paid 50% of points generated on their weaker binary team side.
Once paid out on points are matched against the stronger binary team side and flushed. Any leftover points on the stronger binary team side carry over.
Three Star Bonus
On every group of three personally recruited affiliates, 10% of initial funds invested are paid out as the Three Star Bonus.
Rank Achievement Bonuses
PetronPay rewards affiliates for qualifying at Star and higher ranks as follows:
- qualify at Star and receive $100
- qualify at Two Star and receive $200
- qualify at Three Star and receive an iPhone and Apple Watch
- qualify at Ruby and receive a MacBook
- qualify at Emerald and receive a trip to Cancun and $1000
- qualify at Sapphire and receive a trip to Europe and a “game ticket”
- qualify at Diamond and receive a Mini Coupe from BMW
- qualify at Ambassador and receive a Jeep Cherokee
- qualify at President and receive a Mercedes Benz Class G
- qualify at Emperor and receive a Porsche Carrera
- qualify at Diamond Emperor and receive a house worth up to $250,000
Joining PetronPay
PetronPay affiliate membership fees are tied to how much an affiliate wants to invest:
- Barrel 25 – $5 admin fee + $25 investment
- Barrel 50 – $5 admin fee + $50 investment
- Barrel 99 – $10 admin fee + $99 investment
- Barrel 249 – $15 admin fee + $249 investment
- Barrel 499 – $15 admin fee + $499 investment
- Barrel 999 – $30 admin fee + $999 investment
- Barrel 1999 – $30 admin fee + $1999 investment
Upon recording a 300% ROI in the backoffice, the above fees are repayable as recurring investment.
Conclusion
PetronPay claims it
represents a privileged investment that allows investors to speculate on the price of a barrel of oil.
In reality its yet another Ponzi scheme through which Europeans are scamming African victims.
There is no evidence of PetronPay having anything to do with oil. Nor is the company registered to offer securities in any jurisdiction.
This means that at a minimum, PetronPay is committing securities fraud and operating illegally the world over (the FMA’s warning is clear evidence of this).
As it stands the only verifiable source of revenue entering PetronPay is new investment.
Using new investment to pay affiliates a 300% makes PetronPay a Ponzi scheme. Paying commissions on funds invested by recruited affiliates adds an additional pyramid layer to the scheme.
As with all MLM Ponzi schemes, once affiliate recruitment dries up so too will new investment.
This will starve PetronPay of ROI revenue, eventually prompting a collapse.
The math behind Ponzi schemes guarantees that when they collapse, the majority of participants lose money.
Update 28th May 2021 – PetronPay collapsed in late April. The company has since initiated a PETRON token exit-scam.
As expected, the address in Switzerland is a maildrop (that, or a completely made-up one, are the only two possibilities with outfits like this). It’s a shared office rental place, which also offers virtual offices, touted as:
eoffice.net/en/locations/switzerland/zurich-airgate/zurich-airgate-virtual-office-premium-2306.html
They also have French as an option on the website. I took a quick look at that. At first glance, it appears to be grammatically correct, and correctly spelled, throughout, unlike the English version. I’d take a bet on there being a native (or near-native) speaker of French being involved.
Bad news.
Petronpay website has been closed since this morning. It looks like the final end of the game. RIP!!!
Website still loading here (???)
I will like to be a part of this group as investors, I need to know what could I do for trusting this?
You want to trust randoms running a Ponzi scheme over the internet?
Congratulations, you’re part of the problem.
I was planning to invest in the company through a friend but through what I saw I’m completely discouraged to be honest.
I’m about to invest but upon further research i noticed that it’s a Ponzi scheme, I’d choose not to.
I have a friend who is actually profiting from this and I am so tempted to join buh afraid too.
Get rid of friends who profit on the backs of others by stealing/sharing from a scam, money made or no money made.
And then don’t ever look at another obvious scam
I’m a Kenyan citizen and I have been trying to reach out to this story of petropay. how does it work to some African countries.
@Joseph
The same way it works in all countries. You hand over your money to Ponzi scammers and its gone.
Im just chatting to someone about this now but this looks so dodgy.
Heard about it as well. Doing my research online to learn more.
But I calculated that if you risk your money within the first 66 days you get back your initial amount – the rest is just passive income.
Calculated based on what? You have no idea when recruitment will tank or PetronPay’s admins will exit-scam.
Petronpay, something is wrong. The company no longer wants to pay per day.
She promised to pay on May 1 and May 15, she did not on May 1.
She now promises to do it monthly. it smells like an exit scam
I have been trying to get my $25 that I just withdrew 2 weeks back but the money is nowhere to be found coz it says I withdraw the money but it’s not in my luno account and luno can’t trace it.
Your money is gone. PetronPay has collapsed and is now running an exit scam. Sorry for your loss.

Companies like PetronPay that promise daily, weekly or monthly returns are ALWAYS scams. Do not let yourself be fooled again.

You invested in a Ponzi scheme and your money is gone. Sorry for your loss.
